Wildlife Rehabilitation in Australia.

west oz

This is an opportunity of a lifetime - working with native Australian wildlife in a quiet bushland setting, surrounded by gorgeous National Park. The main focus of this wildlife centre is a commitment to the protection and welfare of native wildlife. Sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife receive medical treatment in the newly built wildlife hospital, and are then rehabilitated and eventually released back into the wild. Patients include Echidnas, Bobtails, Quendas, Red Kangaroos and birds such as the Tawny Frogmouth and Lorikeet. Orphaned babies, such as Bandicoots and Possums, receive specialized care in the nurseries. The successful Bilby captive breeding and reintroduction program at the centre was started in response to the declining Bilby population on the Peron Peninsula. Several species of native animals are under threat, including the endangered Boodie, Woylie, Red Tailed Black Cockatoo, Western Barred Bandicoot and Bilby. Be a part of the solution by participating in the rehabilitation, captive breeding and education programs at this Western Australia wildlife rehabilitation centre.

You will be taken into town to buy food supplies (which will be self funded and is about $25 a day) and you will be responsible for preparing your own meals. There will be opportunities to go into town with other volunteers to enjoy local restaurants, shopping and entertainment. This is a highly individual experience. Clients stay alone in a cabin on the centre's land. Evenings are free and self directed and it is up to you to approach volunteers and engage with them. You can venture into town (50 minutes by bus) or spend time alone. Public transport is not very frequent but the bus stop is only 20 minutes’ walk away. It is much easier to ask one of the many volunteers to get a lift! The hut can be set up with a double bed and an additional single bed to accommodate two people maximum . Accommodation away from the centre can be made available for an extra fee. Please make sure when you book your flights, you arrive the first day of your shift between 9am and 4pm. Are you nervous about travel and your safety? It's okay, travelling and volunteering can be overwhelming, that is why we exist! To help you travel safe, volunteer smartly and get back home in one piece. To read more about how we help you stay safe, please read our Guide to Safety.

Volunteer Activities: The centre is open 7 days a week and each day is broken down into 3 shifts (Morning: 8am to 12.30, Lunch: 12 to 4.30pm and Evening: 4pm to 8.30pm). Volunteers are expected to participate in at least 7 shifts a week. Of course, picking up more shifts is more than welcome. Fully qualified veterinarians or vet nurses may be involved in assessing, diagnosing and treating sick and injured wildlife. Medical volunteer activities include assessing and diagnosing and treating sick and injured wildlife. Standard volunteer activities include cleaning enclosures, feeding the wildlife, helping with orphaned babies, helping with administrative tasks, and assisting with education and outreach programs. If you are interested in learning special skills while volunteering you must attend the skills training sessions held once every 2 months. You may volunteer between those times but you will not be able to take part in more advanced animal care techniques.

This is an ongoing program with operations every day of the year. There are no specific start or end dates. We work with you and your schedule so you can serve this community and help animals when you are available. However, due to very limited space, applications should be at least 9-12 months in advance.

Classification of Placement: Medical: Entry, Advanced and Specialized. Standard: Entry, Advanced and Specialized.
