Dog Rescue in Sierra Leone.

sierra leone

Sierra Leone is home to a large population of feral dogs. Many of these dogs are pets that were abandoned by the people of Sierra Leone as they fought for their own survival during years of civil war. Many more dogs have been born on the streets where they struggle daily for survival. Estimates now place the stray dog population as high as 27,000 in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. These dogs live hard lives. With no veterinary care, many are suffering from injuries and illnesses that could easily be treated or prevented. Already in poor health, it is common for these stray dogs to die from starvation and from lack of shelter. The feral dog population also poses a very serious health risk to the people of Sierra Leone through dog bite injuries and the transmission of rabies. AEI's partner in Sierra Leone has been working toward a humane solution to this problem. Their approach has been to provide community-based solutions while lobbying the government for lasting changes. Spay, neutering, de-worming and vaccination programs have assisted tens of thousands of dogs to date. Outreach programs have increased people's awareness of the humane options available to control the dog population. As these animals become healthier and people become less fearful, the hope is that dogs will once again be welcomed into the community as valued companions. Help make this happen - volunteer to assist the street dogs of Sierra Leone today.
